SAILORS OF DUBLIN BAY TWENTYONES – THE WORLD’S OLDEST CRUISER RACER CLASS

Dublin Bay 21 Revival continues with “Sailors of Dublin Bay Twentyones

Membership is Open for the 2023 Sailing Season

The successful revival of the Dublin Bay Twentyone fleet, under Fionán De Barra and Hal Sisk, continues apace with plans to set up a new organisation “Sailors of Dublin Bay Twentyones” (the Sailors) underway and for which membership is now open. The new organisation’s primary purpose is to attract and manage racing crew rosters for the fleet and cover the annual running costs for the fleet’s racing plans for the 2023 season and beyond.

The fleet is owned by the Dublin Bay 21-Footer Class Association and all restoration costs are, and will continue to be met by the association. However, the annual running costs are not sustainable for the Association in the long term, and this is where the “Sailors of Dublin Bay Twentyones” come into play. The membership fee to join will cost €500 per person for the full season which will cover racing entrance fees, insurance, running and maintenance costs. The Sailors is being set up under the auspices of the Dublin Bay 21-Footer Class Association.

2022 saw the return of Naneen, Garavogue and Estelle, to DBSC after a 37-year absence and this year sees the addition of Geraldine to the fleet. All four boats will compete in DBSC and various regattas including the Volvo Regatta for the 2023 season. To facilitate this and to underpin the sustainability of the Class, the new organisation will comprise Skippers, Competent Crew and beginners who are committed to racing on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and other events such as rallies and regattas.

Restoration of this unique class was undertaken by Fionán De Barra and Hal Sisk, whose time, energy, and resources underpinned the restoration of the fleet. They are now keen to bring it to the next stage and to ensure an active and vibrant organisation of committed sailors of all levels from Skipper to novice. Each boat will be allocated several skippers and experienced crew members derived from the membership who will assist and encourage less-experienced members to refine and grow their own skills in sailing these magnificent boats.
