The strength of Junior sailing over a range of classes in the RSGYC was evident in Schull last weekend when six helms of the sixteen boat fleet were RSGYC members.
The ISA Junior Helmsman in an invitational event. Each dinghy class nominates the top sailors from their National Championships and the ISA select sailors from the list to compete in this prestigious competition.
Representing the RSGYC were
Kate Lyttle and Niamh Henry, 420 Ladies National Champions
Tom Higgins, Optimist National Champion, crewed by his brother, Henry Higgins
Peter Fagan, Laser 4.7 and his crew Ross Morgan
Jack Fahy, Topper National Champion and his crew Eoghan Byrne
Toby Hudson Fowler and Greg Arrowsmith, RS200
Henry Start and Morgan Devine, Feva National Champions.
There were 6 races on Saturday and a further 2 races on Sunday. The top 10 boats then raced in a medal race which was worth double points and was non discardable. Kate Lyttle and Niamh Henry came 4th in the medal race and 4th overall. They were the best female helm and crew and were crowned Junior All Ireland Women Champions. They were closely followed by Tom Higgins in 5th, Jack Fahy 6th, and Peter Fagan 7th. The event was won by Johnny Durcan from RCYC.
