The Club hosted the Grant Thornton ILCA National Championships this week, with strong westerly winds forcing the cancellation of the final day’s racing on Sunday.

Sailors across all fleets got two days of racing, with light to moderate westerly breeze on Friday and winds gusting into the mid-20s on Saturday. The ILCA 4 fleet was tightly contested, with just 3 points separating the first four boats before racing was called off on Sunday. We’re delighted to say four RSGYC members made up that top four, with six in the top ten overall: Kate Spain took 1st place, Amy Kieran 2nd, Jackson Clarke 3rd, and Amy Shelley 4th and third-placed girl. James Crawford finished 6th and Philipp Arthurs 8th, giving RSGYC a dominant hold on the top ten. There were other strong performances too, with John Kenny finishing 14th and Caoimhe O’Toole 18th.

ILCA 6 Prizewinners

In the ILCA 6 fleet, Annalise Murphy took 1st and Sienna Wright 2nd, closely chased by RSGYC’s own young guns Marcus Shelley in 3rd and Conor Cronin hot on his heels in 4th. Both Marcus and Conor pushed the Olympic silver medallist hard, each winning a race on Saturday to pile on the pressure. With Rory Brennan Hobs 7th, Lucy Ives 9th, Cormac Byrne 10th, and Max O’Hare 11th, the RSGYC ILCA 6 fleet is clearly in good hands. Further down the fleet, Jack Ives (16th), Patrick Fegan (17th), Jacob Browne (23rd), Zita Tempany (24th), Patrick Foley (25th), Abbi Murphy (27th), Darren Griffin (28th), Cian O’Flannigan (32nd), Conor Clancy (33rd), Kate Molloy (34th), and Tom Darcy (35th) all reinforce the depth of talent coming through in the ILCA 6 fleet.

Update for the middle of the summer – It is going well; we have lots of kids down for both the Junior programs as well as the Performance programs this week which has created a lively atmosphere down at the club. Last week we had our Junior Regatta which by many accounts was a resounding success, especially the barbeque and ice cream afterwards, ice cream was a big hit with the marvelous weather we are experiencing at the moment. We have just had our busiest week of the year so far and it was great fun with a great atmosphere.

For the optimist fleet in regatta fleet, we had one of our own come first – Samuel McIntyre – this is a great testament to our junior programs and our coaches as well as the kids. In Main fleet we also had success with our oppies taking home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place medals and vouchers from Viking Marine. Quick thank you to Paul Molloy for sorting the vouchers out. We also had success in PY Fleet with 1st going to Julian O’Leary and Dylan Kennedy in their 29er. In Ilca 4s we had John Kenny from the George come 1st and Felix Crinion come 3rd as well as Cian O’Flanagan in the Ilca 6 come 1st as well. All in all it was a successful regatta for both the coaches and the kids.

To add to the busyness of last week we also had the Adventure group camping on Dalkey Island and experienced great weather. They cooked their own food and roasted smores over the fire. To add to events, we had fun day Friday, another resounding success thanks to the brilliant weather and sunshine and a fun barbeque afterwards.

New app for Sailing; Sail Robin

Member John Sheehy has just built a new app for sailing; Sail Robin. From the day sailor, to the round the cans sailor, to the one design sailor, there’s something for everyone.

The app plots your course, tracks every sail, replays your performance, gives you the tools to coach yourself better, and connects you with the sailing community. It also allows you to upload your data from other devices such as a garmin watch or a vakaros. The Sail Robin ‘Flight school’ can run the analytics on this data also.

It includes all the DBSC course cards, and for this weekend, it even includes the Regatta Course Card. Just select the course, start the timer, the app will do the rest…

29er Nationals Report

As summer looked like it might finally have arrived the 29er National Championships kicked off in the Royal St. George Yacht Club from the 19th to 21st June 2026, supported by Covy Watersport and Irish Sailing.

With 10 teams, all relatively new to the fleet, they competed with the mix of conditions only Dublin Bay could throw at them.

To allow time for travelling teams, some of whom were still sitting state exams a late start and only two races were planned for Friday. A full card of 5 races was achieved on Saturday once the sea breeze kicked in and on Sunday light airs allowed for a further 3 to make up a competitive 10 race series.

Race Officer Barry O’Neill wasted no time in turning around the races. His team were busy as this highly competitive class saw some of the boats finishing within in seconds of each other.

First time 29er eventers Julian O’Leary and Dillon Kennedy (RStGYC) claimed the top Boys team with some very consistent sailing. Another set of newcomers to the class Emily and Annabel Ridout (Ballyholme YC) picked up the best the top Rookie team, showing that their strong Feva abilities translate nicely in to the skiff class.

Gemma Brady and Grace Keating (NYC & LDYC) took home a silver Irish Sailing medal in second place followed closely by Lousie Hanley and Sebastian Wright (YC) in third.

The standout team of the event was Juliet Ryan & Ella Rock (RStGYC) with 11 points from 10 races they were always going to be hard to catch. Their results saw them take home not only 2 Irish Sailing medals as overall National Champions and Women’s National Champions but also the u17 National Championship prize.

In a weekend that had plenty of sun, swimming and burgers on the deck in the George on Saturday it was a good showcase for double handed sailing in youth fleets as there could be. The 29er fleet will look to build on the success of the National Championships and with the standard of sailing on show it is clear evidence that the fleet is moving in the right direction.

Next up for some of the sailors is the World Championships in Kiel, Germany. Having previously qualified at the Youth Nationals in April in Ballyholme YC and the Eastern Championships in NYC in May, Juliet & Ella, Gemma & Grace and Louise & Seb leave for Germany next weekend.

Meanwhile the rest of the fleet will have their eyes on Double Ree which runs on the 25/26 July.

Results can be found here – https://www.sailwave.com/results/9er%20Nats%20Race%20Results.htm
