Tributes poured in from across the sailing world for the French offshore racing star, the reigning Rolex World Sailor of the Year who had received the sport’s highest honour in Dún Laoghaire last year. afloat

Dalin’s name was already etched into the record books. He won the Vendée Globe in January 2025 in a record time of 64 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes and 49 seconds — a performance that stunned the offshore racing world. What made it still more extraordinary was the revelation that followed: he had completed the solo non-stop circumnavigation while undergoing immunotherapy treatment for cancer. afloat

World Sailing chief executive David Graham spoke of a legacy that went far beyond race results, describing Dalin as someone whose bravery in the face of illness meant he would “be held forever in the hearts of sailors.” afloat

The tributes came from the very top. French President Emmanuel Macron described him as “an extraordinary sailor” whose courage in the face of illness inspired far beyond the sailing community. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, president of the International Association of Cape Horners, called him “one of the world’s great sailors,” noting a career that brought victories in 20 major ocean races over two decades. afloat

Those who raced alongside him spoke of a competitor unlike any other. Naval architect Guillaume Verdier, who worked closely with Dalin across several IMOCA campaigns, described him as a sailor who never stopped searching for improvements and understanding every detail of his boats. Rival skipper Yoann Richomme said his record-breaking Vendée Globe victory would remain the crowning achievement of his career. afloat

A naval architect, offshore racer and Vendée Globe champion, Dalin combined technical expertise with exceptional seamanship. He leaves behind his wife, Perrine Le Pape, and their son Oscar. afloat

For those lucky enough to have been in Dún Laoghaire last year — to have seen him receive that award in person — the memory carries an added weight now. The sport came here to honour its finest, and we were part of that moment. Charlie Dalin’s connection to Ireland’s sailing community may have been brief, but it was unforgettable.

He was 42 years old.

The FRANK KEANE BMW ROYAL ST. GEORGE YACHT CLUB REGATTA returns this fourth of July, and it promises to be as spectacular as ever. With over 200 boats expected on the water and many sailors of all ages from clubs across Dublin Bay — from Howth to Dún Laoghaire and beyond — this is one of the great biennial RSGYC Club regattas.  

ON THE WATER

Three race courses will be in action, with at least two races planned on each course. Traditionally the Sailing conditions are wonderful, and the racing is always world class.

ASHORE

The fun doesn’t stop when the racing does. Join us for a full afternoon and evening of celebration:

We are delighted to welcome a very special guest to Dún Laoghaire and to Royal St. George Yacht Club — Pam Lee, one of Ireland’s leading offshore sailors and a truly phenomenal ambassador for the sport. 

Pam will be joining us ahead of her start in the Round Ireland Race, competing in Class 40 — one of the toughest and most demanding classes in offshore racing. There are two fantastic opportunities to meet her and hear her story, and we’d encourage every club member to come along. 

First — Saturday Evening, 14th June — Talk at the DMYC 

The weekend begins with a special open evening at the Dún Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club, where Pam is hosting a casual, welcoming event open to members of all the Dún Laoghaire clubs. She will be giving an adapted version of her recent TEDx talk, Oceans of Possibilities, and speaking about her inspiring #EmpowHer project. It promises to be a wonderful, thought-provoking, and thoroughly enjoyable evening. Families are very welcome. If you’re out sailing on Saturday, why not stroll over to the DMYC afterwards — you won’t regret it. 

Then — Sunday 15th June — Boat Visit at Royal St. George 

On Sunday 15th June, Pam and her Class 40 will be berthing at Royal St. George as our guests, where she will remain until the start of the Round Ireland Race. Come down to the club, step aboard, and see a truly serious offshore racing machine up close. Meet Pam, soak up the atmosphere, and experience what offshore racing at the highest level really looks and feels like. 

And don’t forget — the Spirit of Shackleton is also currently alongside at the club. Two extraordinary ocean-going vessels, right here at your club, at the same time. It is a wonderful reminder of what makes Royal St. George such a special place, and a real opportunity to extend that famous warm George welcome to our offshore sailing visitors.

We have a very special visitor on our pontoon right now, and all club members are warmly invited to come down and take a look. 

The Spirit of Shackleton — a magnificent Clipper 70 — is currently berthed at the club ahead of her next round Ireland voyage, and what a sight she is. This is a proper, serious ocean-going yacht. She has sailed the seven seas, will be serving as a training ship and research vessel, and over the coming years she will be doing it all again. 

This is a rare opportunity to step aboard a boat of this calibre right here at your own club. Come down, take your time, and get a real sense of what blue-water offshore sailing looks and feels like in person. The skipper and crew are on board and very happy to welcome visitors, answer questions, and share their passion for this wonderful vessel. 

We are very fortunate to have her alongside, and it would be a shame to miss her. Whether you’re a seasoned offshore sailor or simply curious about life on the open ocean, the Spirit of Shackleton is well worth a visit.

Our adult sailing programme is well underway, with eight participants currently enjoying their third session and really getting to grips with the fundamentals. The energy and enthusiasm on the water has been brilliant to see! 

Training takes place on our club’s fleet of 1720s — a fantastic boat to learn on, responsive, fun, and perfect for building real sailing skills in a supportive environment. It’s a great way to get out on the water, meet new people, and discover just how enjoyable sailing can be. 

But it’s not just about learning the basics. Completing the course gives you the confidence and skills to step aboard as a capable, competent crew member — and our graduates are always in high demand among club members looking for good crew. It’s a brilliant pathway into the wider life of the club and everything it has to offer. 

Whether you’re a complete beginner, looking to refresh some rusty skills, or wanting to formalise what you already know — this course is for you. 

New courses start every few weeks, so there’s never a bad time to take the plunge.

This Saturday and Sunday, the club is running an Irish Sailing Powerboat Level 2 certification course — and there are still a few spots available! 

This practical, hands-on course will teach you everything you need to safely and confidently operate a powerboat or RIB. Over the two days you’ll cover safe boat handling, basic navigation, and the minimum requirements needed to take out a club boat — or venture further afield on your own. 

It’s a brilliant course, with plenty learned and plenty of fun had along the way. You’ll be out on the water, picking up real skills, and it’s a great way to meet fellow members too. Whether you’re new to powerboats or looking to formalise your experience with an official certification, this is the course for you.
