August 29^th was a delightful evening for racing in a pursuit race, with eight to ten knots of wind from 310 degrees and a blue sky. Rainer positioned the committee boat to the north of the DBSC Turning Mark. Vincent Delany selected a platonic course consisting of Boyd, Seapoint Salthill and finish. It was a distance of 3.24 miles which should have been achievable in just over an hour by even the slowest boats. Thirty -four competitors arrived at the starting area. They varied from Mandy Chambers in a Water Wag, Shindilla as the smallest to Jonathan Nicholson in El Pocko which was tall enough to tower over the entire starting area.

All ran very smoothly with Michael Moran’s Betty B and Shipmans The Den (Aisling Costello), Shelka (Des Walshe), Poppy (Alain Deladienne) and Twocan (David Freeman) being the first to start en route for Boyd Mark. They were soon followed by two Glens and three DBSC 21s.  After sailing only three to four hundred meters, this leading group met a change of wind, or was it a lack of wind? Boats were heading in every direction looking for wind. Later starters sailed around the static bunch of boats in the hope of finding wind.

The committee boat crews of Rainer, Vincent, Stuart, Liz S. and Seamus S called the latest starters Dehliverence, Windjammer and El Pocko to start a little bit earlier, as it was evident that the handicaps were becoming irrelevant. The committee boat followed the fleet in order escape a large black raincloud which was hovering over Tallaght.

Whispers of wind came and went away again. The tide pushing the boats backwards was getting stronger. A long finish line was laid off the Boyd mark and the entire fleet of boats crossed the line together in one tight fleet. 

The winners were: Tim Pearson in a Flying Fifteen.

This is truly one of the Club’s most enjoyable events as it is run solely for the Members of the Royal St. George Yacht Club and is a fantastic opportunity for all of the Club’s Sailing Classes to come together to enjoy some competitive rivalry!

Entry is free, or you can make a donation to the RNLI.  Racing will begin from 6pm onwards followed by a Prize Giving. There will be many special prizes to be won on the day, including awards for Day Boats, Wooden Boats, and this year’s new awards for ‘Best Dressed Boat Overall’,  ‘Best Greeting to the Committee Boat’, and Best Fancy Dress!

Jaguar Claims Edinburgh Cup Corinthian Title

Congratulations to RSGYC member Martin Byrne and the Jaguar Sailing Team, who secured the 2026 Edinburgh Cup Corinthian title in Cowes. After a closely fought week of racing, Jaguar’s strong final-day performance saw the Irish crew draw level on points with Belgium’s Corso before taking the title on countback

RSGYC’s Martin Byrne Wins Edinburgh Cup Corinthian Title

Royal St. George Yacht Club member Martin Byrne and the Jaguar Sailing Team have won the Corinthian division at the 2026 Edinburgh Cup and UK Dragon Grand Prix in Cowes. Sailing IRL201 Jaguar alongside Rory Byrne and Adam Winkleman, the team staged a strong final-day comeback to secure the title in dramatic fashion.

Competing in a highly competitive international Dragon fleet, Jaguar finished level on points with Belgium’s Corso, claiming the championship on countback after the final race. The result marks another Edinburgh Cup Corinthian title for Byrne and his crew.

The championship featured a wide range of conditions, from demanding 30-knot breezes to light and variable winds on the final day. Jaguar’s performance in the lighter conditions, combined with key tuning changes ahead of the last races, helped deliver the decisive result.

All four Irish entries in Cowes competed as Corinthian crews, underlining the strength of amateur Dragon racing from Ireland. Following their success in Cowes, the Jaguar team now looks ahead to the Régates Royales in Cannes and the Dragon World Championship in Hong Kong later this year.

Royal St. George Yacht Club sailors Sean Donnelly and Greg Arrowsmith have won the 2026 Melges 15 Irish National Championship, held on Dublin Bay and hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club. The championship came down to the final races, with the RSGYC crew securing victory by a single point in a highly competitive 22-boat fleet.

Consistency throughout the seven-race series proved decisive. Donnelly and Arrowsmith finished on 18 net points, edging out Tim Norwood and Luke Donagh on 19 points, with Jack Fahy and Adam Hyland completing the podium on 20 points. [afloat.ie]

RSGYC sailors featured strongly throughout the fleet. In addition to the championship-winning performance from Donnelly and Arrowsmith, Jack Fahy and Adam Hyland finished third overall, while Mike Zani and Mike Huang narrowly missed the podium in fourth place after another impressive series.

The event highlighted the continued growth and competitiveness of the Melges 15 class in Ireland, with seven races sailed and five different crews sharing race victories across the championship. [afloat.ie]

SeaSpark delivers a variety of practical marine-related training and educational programmes, and we have been made aware of their courses through other clubs that have hosted them successfully. Eamonn has suggested that we gauge interest from members before deciding whether to proceed with arranging courses at the Royal St. George Yacht Club.

At this stage, no dates have been confirmed. We are simply looking to understand the level of interest among members and identify which courses would be most popular before making any commitments.

If this is something that may be of interest to you, please complete the Expression of Interest form below. Completing the form does not commit you to attending a course. It simply helps us assess demand and determine whether we should proceed with hosting training sessions at the Club.

• Marine and boating skills
• Safety and emergency preparedness
• Seamanship and navigation
• Environmental and coastal awareness
• Other specialist maritime training programmes

The Club will be busy with the activity of the forthcoming ILCA Worlds Championships being co-hosted by the NYC and RSGYC every day from Tuesday 18th August to Saturday 12th September when competitors will be launching from the Club’s slipway and coaches will be berthing their ribs on the Club Pontoon. All of this activity should not affect our members normal sailing from the Club and members are encouraged to visit the Club during the championships and enjoy the activity. The competitors ILCAs will be parking on the Carlisle Pier when not sailing and their coaches ribs will berth on the outer pontoons of both Clubs. The inner pontoons will be kept free for Club and Members use and regular activities. The dinghy park will not be effected by the championships but please do check in with the Sailing Office re: launching times so as to ensure efficient launching for all.  

This year, the event race office will be in an office on the Carlisle Pier. There will be enhanced security in the Clubs and surrounding area during the Championship period, please do bring your membership card with you.

Olympic sailing class world championships are generally only held in Europe once every 4 years and as such, this is a once in a generation opportunity for Ireland to host such a prestigious and high calibre event and the two host Clubs – the NYC and RSGYC – look forward to hosting over 400 Olympic class sailors and coaches in our Clubs over the next few weeks.

The Club hosted the Grant Thornton ILCA National Championships this week, with strong westerly winds forcing the cancellation of the final day’s racing on Sunday. 

Sailors across all fleets got two days of racing, with light to moderate westerly breeze on Friday and winds gusting into the mid-20s on Saturday. The ILCA 4 fleet was tightly contested, with just 3 points separating the first four boats before racing was called off on Sunday. We’re delighted to say four RSGYC members made up that top four, with six in the top ten overall: Kate Spain took 1st place, Amy Kieran 2nd, Jackson Clarke 3rd, and Amy Shelley 4th and third-placed girl. James Crawford finished 6th and Philipp Arthurs 8th, giving RSGYC a dominant hold on the top ten. There were other strong performances too, with John Kenny finishing 14th and Caoimhe O’Toole 18th. 

ILCA 6 Prizewinners 

In the ILCA 6 fleet, Annalise Murphy took 1st and Sienna Wright 2nd, closely chased by RSGYC’s own young guns Marcus Shelley in 3rd and Conor Cronin hot on his heels in 4th. Both Marcus and Conor pushed the Olympic silver medallist hard, each winning a race on Saturday to pile on the pressure. With Rory Brennan Hobs 7th, Lucy Ives 9th, Cormac Byrne 10th, and Max O’Hare 11th, the RSGYC ILCA 6 fleet is clearly in good hands. Further down the fleet, Jack Ives (16th), Patrick Fegan (17th), Jacob Browne (23rd), Zita Tempany (24th), Patrick Foley (25th), Abbi Murphy (27th), Darren Griffin (28th), Cian O’Flannigan (32nd), Conor Clancy (33rd), Kate Molloy (34th), and Tom Darcy (35th) all reinforce the depth of talent coming through in the ILCA 6 fleet.

Update for the middle of the summer – It is going well; we have lots of kids down for both the Junior programs as well as the Performance programs this week which has created a lively atmosphere down at the club. Last week we had our Junior Regatta which by many accounts was a resounding success, especially the barbeque and ice cream afterwards, ice cream was a big hit with the marvelous weather we are experiencing at the moment. We have just had our busiest week of the year so far and it was great fun with a great atmosphere.

For the optimist fleet in regatta fleet, we had one of our own come first – Samuel McIntyre – this is a great testament to our junior programs and our coaches as well as the kids. In Main fleet we also had success with our oppies taking home 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place medals and vouchers from Viking Marine. Quick thank you to Paul Molloy for sorting the vouchers out. We also had success in PY Fleet with 1^st going to Julian O’Leary and Dylan Kennedy in their 29er. In Ilca 4s we had John Kenny from the George come 1^st  and Felix Crinion come 3^rd as well as Cian O’Flanagan in the Ilca 6 come 1^st as well. All in all it was a successful regatta for both the coaches and the kids.

To add to the busyness of last week we also had the Adventure group camping on Dalkey Island and experienced great weather. They cooked their own food and roasted smores over the fire. To add to events, we had fun day Friday, another resounding success thanks to the brilliant weather and sunshine and a fun barbeque afterwards.
