Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club was the unusual geographic location for this weekend’s ILCA Connacht Championships, however, a great choice for what was a spectacular weekend on and off the water. Unsurprisingly, entries were down somewhat with the ICRA’s running in parallel, however, a healthy 60 ILCA’s descended on Wexford for the weekend.

With very light winds forecast, organisers were forced to delay launch on the Saturday morning until a steady 8 knot sea breeze filled in from the South East in a gradually warming day. A perfect trapezoid course was set under the expert eye of Captain Michael Doyle who’s team worked tirelessly lifting a shifting marks while the breeze settled.

In the ILCA 7’s, new arrival from the ILCA 6 squad, Sam Ledoux (RSGYC), took advantage of his light frame to show a clean pair of heels, only to discover an OCS was waiting for him at the finish. Clubmate, Oisin Hughes duly took advantage, with another newly converted ILCA 6 squad member, Jonathan O’Shaughnessy (RCYC), in second, followed by master, Conor Byrne (RSGYC) in third. In the second and last race of the day, under a dying breeze, Ledoux once again showed off his boat speed and handling with a first place finish, with O’Shaughnessy in second and Byrne in third.

In the twenty two boat ILCA 6 fleet, Irish Sailing squad member, Sophie Kilmartin (RSGYC & MYC) was lying just one point ahead of HYC sailor, Charlie Keating who was in joint second with Daniel O’Connor of RSGYC after two races. Andrew Kingston of RCYC showed some serious boat speed with a well earned win in the second race of the day, which left him just one point behind O’Connor and Keating after two races.

In the twenty nine strong ILCA 4 fleet, Thea Daly (RSGYC) was overnight leader with recent Optimist Class converts and clubmates Caoilinn McDonnell and Marcus Shelley on joint points in second and third respectively.

Due to the continued dying breeze, sailors were ushered ashore after race two of the day to be greeted by a warm welcome, cold drinks and rugby in the bar.

With such close finishes on the Saturday, the stage was set for a very competitive Sunday. With races to catch up on, organisers were keen to get sailors on the water early for a 10:25am start. In an overcast and thunder threatening sky, the breeze was slow to build, but finally settled in a 5 knot north easterly for the first race of the day.

In the ILCA 7 fleet, Sam Ledoux yet again took advantage of the light winds with two first place finishes with clubmate Oisin Hughes finishing with two second places. Jonathan O’Shaughnessy held onto his overnight third place, but not without drama, as Conor Byrne who was leading the last race was pipped in separate match racing duels with Ledoux and Hughes forcing him into a third place finish and fourth overall.

In the ILCA 6 fleet, Charlie Keating came out of the blocks like a bullet with two first place finishes on the Sunday pipping Sophie Kilmartin by just one point with Daniel O’Connor in third place overall.

In the ILCA 4 fleet, Thea Daly held onto her overnight lead to finish first overall and one point ahead of Caoileann McDonnell in second and Lucy Ives in third.

Huge thanks to Rooster and Viking Marine for supplying prizegiving prizes which were thankfully received by all winners on the day. Massive thanks to organizers, Don Ryan and Eoin Thompson and of course, Race Officer, Captain Michael Doyle and his extended team for managing to get a full race series completed in extremely challenging weather conditions.

ILCA 7’s

1st Overall – Sam Ledoux

2nd Overall – Oisin Hughes

4th Overall & 1st Master – Conor Byrne

6th Overall & 3rd Master – Gavan Murphy

ILCA 6’s

2nd Overall & 1st Girl – Sophie Kilmartin

3rd Overall – Daniel O’Connor

4th Overall & 2nd Girl – Ava Ennis

8th Overall & 3rd Girl – Becky Lowney

9th Overall – Jessica Riordan

So 6 x RSGYC sailors in the top 10 of the ILCA 6 fleet

ILCA 4’s

1st Overall – Thea Daly

2nd Overall – Caoilinn McDonnell

3rd Overall – Lucy Ives

So, 7 x RSGYC sailors in top 10 of the ILCA 4 fleet

The sailors are waiting patiently with an AP flying for the wind to build inshore for the last day of the Mapfre Euromed Cup at St Paul’s Bay in Malta.

It’s all to play for in the ILCA 6 fleet, where Royal St George sailor Daniel O’Connor lies in fourth place overall, three points behind 2022 ILCA 4 European champion Irene De Tomas Perello. A further three points ahead is local Mathew Flores, with Dmytro Karabadzhak 9 points clear and in the lead.

Emily Conan had a superb day yesterday, especially in race 5, where she scored second place. She goes into today lying in eighth place overall, and she is joined by her fellow Royal St George sailor Jessica Riordan in the top 10 after some very consistent sailing. Howth’s Charlie Keating closely follows them in 11th overall.

In the Optimist fleet, Carolina Carra remains the best Irish performer in a very competitive fleet. She had a good day yesterday, again sailing very consistently, and finished the day in 60th place overall. Jude Hynes-Knight sailing under Tralee Bay Sailing Club’s burger is in 80th overall and Felix Dion, sailing from the National Yacht Club, is 88th.

The scene at the Royal St. George Yacht Club as boats are launched for the Optimist National Championships at Dun Laoghaire Harbour

The Irish Optimist Nationals at the Royal St. George Yacht Club started in blistering sunshine today with light variable winds on Dublin Bay on Thursday.

Chief Race Officers, Ed Totterdell, ably supported by David Lovegrove and David Bolger managed to get two races in across both main and regatta fleets, despite the tricky, shifty easterly conditions in a strong ebb tide.

The Main Fleet contains two categories, junior and senior, both of which account for one hundred and twenty-five of the total fleet.

UK visitor Lila Edwards from Parkstone Yacht Club leads overall after counting a 2.0 and 1.0 in the opening races.

Second is the host club’s Jules Start on 6.0 points with Conor Cronin of Malahide Yacht Club also on six points in third. Results below.

Many of these sailors are coming to the end of a compact season following three Irish regionals, a Europeans, Worlds as well as French and UK Nationals travelling parties.

Despite that, the hunger, competition and camaraderie in the fleet is evidently very strong, with lots of friends reacquainting after the long summer.

The thirty-seven-strong Regatta Racing Fleet, a new departure for IODAI, were raced in Scotsman’s Bay, while the nineteen Coached Regatta Fleet sailors were raced in the confines of the harbour.

Feedback from the Regatta Racing Fleet sailors was very positive, mentioning that they loved being out in the Bay and racing on a slightly larger course than they otherwise would have been used to.

The sailors were treated to hot food, party games, music and an ‘in it to win it’ draw when they returned to shore, the latter being a major hit. Thanks to Vodafone and Viking Marine for the daily draw prices.

The forecast is for light variable conditions for the remainder of the four-day event, but if the stars align and the weather gods play ball, a sea breeze would be very welcomed to the otherwise idyllic conditions.

Grant Thornton ILCA Sprint Regatta – Sunday, August 07

The Dun Laoghaire ILCA/Laser fleet has announced the fourth of five Sprint Regattas planned for 2022, proudly supported again by Grant Thornton Ireland. These events, hosted by the Royal St George Yacht Club, provide a unique sailing experience for novice and experienced Laser sailors.

The one-day regatta is open to Laser sailors both junior and adult and in all rigs; ILCA 4 (4.7), ILCA 6 (Radial) and ILCA 7 (Standard). There is particular emphasis from the race committee on ensuring a fast-paced and fun event for competitors of all ages and abilities. Novice sailors are most welcome as this provides a unique format to be involved in racing at the highest level across the local fleet.

With first gun at 14:00, there will be a minimum of 5 races in quick succession for each fleet, with each race lasting between 20-30 minutes. Prizes are awarded for the top three positions in each fleet with separate prize categories for female and male sailors, plus under 30’s and Masters.

The event is open to all ILCA Lasers based in Dún Laoghaire. Travelling boats are welcome to enter. Due to the ongoing space pressures across the local clubs, visiting boats shall launch from the public slip in the Coal Harbour. Visiting boats are welcome to use the facilities in the club after sailing.

Speaking at the announcement of the July Sprint, Mick Shelley who is Audit Partner at Grant Thornton Ireland and himself an ILCA 7 sailor said that; “With the ILCA Ireland nationals just around the corner, we’re expecting a big turnout at this sprint. The format provides a brilliant opportunity for the fleet across Dun Laoghaire to get on the water for some competitive, fun and safe sailing. Grant Thornton Ireland is very proud to be associated with this regatta series.”
