SUMMARY:Supper and Talk with Des Ekin
DESCRIPTION:Des Ekin\, author of bestselling book The Stolen Village\, will talk about one of the most dramatic stories in Irish history – the pirate slave raid known as “The Sack of Baltimore”. \nIn June 1631\, a joint force of pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire stormed ashore at the sleepy little harbour village of Baltimore\, Co. Cork\, and abducted nearly all the villagers. More than 100 people – mainly women and children – were borne away to a life of slavery in North Africa. Only two of them ever saw Ireland again. \n\nThe Stolen Village is a fascinating tale of international piracy and culture clash nearly 400 years ago and is the first book to cover this relatively unknown and under-researched incident in Irish history\, shortlisted for the Argosy Irish Nonfiction Book of the Year Award. \nThis event will begin at 7pm\, consisting of a talk followed by a two course supper for €25. \nBook your place today by calling the Club at 01 280 1811 or emailing Eleanor housemanager@rsgyc.ie

SUMMARY:Short Lecture: The Sinking of The Endurance
DESCRIPTION:On the 21st November\, the Club will be hosting a short lecture on the Sinking of the Endurance as part of the Shackleton Endurance Exhibition\, which is open to the public until the 30th December. \nA lecture will be given by Liam Maloney\, in-house historian\, on one of the most incredible survival stories in history: the sinking of the Endurance. \n\nThis event will take place at your Club between 4pm – 6pm. Admission €15. Book your place by contacting John O’Reilly at joreilly@shackletonexhibition.com or by calling the exhibition at 01 236 0644. \n“As if the ship and its crew had not been plagued by enough of it already\, heavy pack ice was again sighted\, and hours later a blowing gale reared its ugly head. For two days\, the Endurance took shelter under an unlikely aegis – dodging to and fro under the lee of a stranded iceberg. As the gale eased\, the ship made crawling headway towards her Antarctic destination\, now just one day’s sail distant. On encountering the ice pack once more\, Shackleton opted to work through it\, but with temperatures plummeting\, there would be no escape from its icy squeeze.”
