New app for Sailing; Sail Robin

Member John Sheehy has just built a new app for sailing; Sail Robin.  From the day sailor, to the round the cans sailor, to the one design sailor, there’s  something for everyone.  

The app plots your course, tracks every sail, replays your performance, gives you the tools to coach yourself better, and connects you with the sailing community. It also allows you to upload your data from other devices such as a garmin watch or a vakaros.  The Sail Robin ‘Flight school’ can run the analytics on this data also.

It includes all the DBSC course cards, and for this weekend, it even includes the Regatta Course Card.  Just select the course,  start the timer, the app will do the rest…

Cannonball Trophy in Cowes

Dun Laoghaire team triumphs after 12-race showdown against Royal London and Royal Netherlands clubs

The Royal St George Yacht Club emerged victorious at the 2026 Cannonball Team Racing Trophy following a highly competitive weekend of racing in Cowes, Isle of Wight.

Hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club, the annual event brought together teams from the Royal St George Yacht Club, the Royal Netherlands Yacht Club and the Royal London Yacht Club for two days of close-fought racing in Osborne Bay. The racing took place beneath the magnificent backdrop of Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s former seaside residence, which overlooks the eastern Solent and provided a spectacular setting for the competition.

A total of 12 races were sailed over the weekend, with the Royal St George team delivering a consistently strong performance throughout the series. Recording six race victories, the Dun Laoghaire sailors secured overall victory and lifted the Cannonball Trophy after one of the most closely contested editions of the event in recent years.

Representing the Royal St George Yacht Club were Peter Bowring, John O’Connor, Max Treacy, Adam Smyth, Marcus Pearson, Tim Pearson, Neil Hegarty and Charlie Bolger. The team demonstrated the tactical awareness, teamwork and boat handling that are the hallmarks of successful team racing, combining experience and composure to stay ahead of their rivals across the weekend.

The Cannonball Trophy has become a valued fixture in the team racing calendar, fostering strong sporting ties and friendly rivalry between the three historic yacht clubs. While competition on the water was intense, the event also reflected the camaraderie and shared passion for sailing that continues to underpin the long-standing relationship between the participating clubs.

For the Royal St George Yacht Club, the victory represents another notable success in team racing and adds the Cannonball Trophy to an increasingly impressive list of achievements in the discipline.

The FRANK KEANE BMW ROYAL ST. GEORGE YACHT CLUB REGATTA is one of the most beloved days on our sailing calendar — and it wouldn’t be possible without the fantastic team of volunteers who make it all happen.

This year we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to get involved both ashore and afloat. Whether your thing is race management, meet and greet, entertainment, or just being part of the buzz on one of the best days of the year — there’s a role for everyone.

Official Launch – Spirit Of Shackleton 

Dun Laoghaire Plaza

We are delighted to welcome President of Ireland Catherine Connolly to the RSGYC on Friday 15th May for the official launch of the Spirit of Shackleton — an inspiring new youth development yacht designed to empower the next generation through adventure, teamwork, and maritime learning.

The President will arrive at the Plaza outside the Club, where she will be welcomed by the Army Band, before making her way to the Club pontoon where the Spirit of Shackleton will be berthed. She will take part in the official naming and blessing ceremony, after which a Reception hosted by the Atlantic Global Foundation will take place in the Maritime Museum.

This special event offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the vessel up close, discover its mission, and be part of an exciting new chapter in Ireland’s seafaring story. If you are in Dún Laoghaire on Friday, please do come down to the Club to observe the occasion.

Volunteer Stewards Needed If you would like to be more involved, we are looking for members to act as Stewards — welcoming and directing guests on the day. If you are interested, please reply to this edition of the Journal and we will be in touch.

Main Gate Access Restrictions — Friday 16:00–17:30

Please note that due to the launch event, there will be no car access to the deck between 16:00 and 17:30 on Friday. Pedestrian access will continue as normal via the pedestrian gate and the front door throughout this time.

Last Sunday’s vintage car and bike rally at the Royal St. George was a resounding success, bringing together enthusiasts and spectators for a truly memorable day. The event began with a gathering of beautifully maintained classic cars at the club, creating a vibrant and nostalgic atmosphere.

From there, participants set off on a scenic drive to Greenan Maze in Co. Wicklow, enjoying the journey as much as the destination. The route showcased both the elegance of the vehicles and the stunning countryside, making for a highlight of the day.

Following the outing, everyone returned to the club where a delicious lunch was served, providing the perfect opportunity to relax, share stories, and celebrate the occasion. Overall, the rally was a wonderful display of community spirit, passion for vintage vehicles, and excellent organisation—an event that will surely be remembered and eagerly anticipated again next year.
