Royal St George Yacht Club Cruising Group – June bank holiday cruise in company.

Five boats departed Dun Laoghaire at 7am on Friday 29th May with two crews spending the Thursday night at the club pontoon.

The boats were Peter Bowring on Terra Nova, Brian Darcy on Margaux, Carl Fagan on Beleal, Peter Richardson on Dehliverence and Derek Ryan on Brizo. We were joined on the Saturday night at anchor by John White on Northern Soul.

We motor sailed to East Kish between the Kish and Bray banks led by Terra Nova and Margaux before turning off the engines and setting a course of 95 degrees for the Caernarfon safe water mark. The breeze filled in to a steady 12 to 16 knots from south southwest and we sailed at a steady 7 knots on a single tack across the Irish sea, arriving at Pilots Cove about 17.45. We waited until 7pm to cross the Caernarfon bar and the five boats rafted up in Victoria Dock marina about 5 miles up the Menai.

A hearty dinner was arranged in the Black Boy Inn with a couple of pints before retiring at a civilised hour.

High water of 10.10 on Saturday meant an early departure with the harbour master Ffion recommending we go at slack water so we departed at 9.30. Dehliverence, having had an issue with their anchor decided to remain at Caernarfon for the Saturday.

We had agreed to rendezvous with boats from the National Yacht Club ably led by Frank Cassidy at Porth Dinllaen at anchor for Saturday night.

Once back over the bar, Porth Dinllaen was 12 miles to the south across Caernarfon bay and while the wind was on the nose, it was a pleasant 10 to 12 knots and all but one boat chose to sail.

All four boats were at anchor by 2pm and the dinghy’s were inflated to go ashore. The Ty Coch Inn (Red House) bar is right on the beach and with the sun splitting the stones there was a fine crowd with families enjoying the sunshine. We settled into a few beers and food and awaited the National Yacht club boats that departed Dun Laoghaire that morning. The next boat to arrive was George member John White on Northern Soul at 3pm

Between 5pm and 6pm the National boats started to arrive with Jascah, Wave Dancer, The Blondie, BOD, and White Pearl. We also had Olga from the Irish.

Porth Dinllaen is a beautiful anchorage with good holding and despite 20 knots plus over night everyone had a comfortable night aboard because of the sheltered aspect.

Given the strong winds forecast for bank holiday Monday a decision was made early that we would return on the Sunday morning. Between 8am and 10.30am the boats gradually departed back across the Irish sea with everyone home by 8pm. It was a close reach, again on a single tack with average boat speed of 6.5 to 7 knots. The National boats convened in their Club while Terra Nova, Margaux and Brizo tied up on the Club pontoon. With the evening capped off with a few pints in McKennas.

For details as to who parked on a sandbank in the Menai or whose dinghy was recovered drifting in the dark by a National YC member attendance at the next cruise in company will be required.

A particular commendation to Carl Fagan on Beleal who did his first offshore passage two handed and acquitted himself with some distinction.

Until the next time.

Royal St. George Yacht Club sailors delivered an exceptional performance at the ILCA Masters in Howth over the weekend, showcasing both strength and depth across the fleet.

Roger Craig led the charge in the ILCA 7 division, producing a dominant display to take overall victory. After settling in with a fourth place in the opening race, Roger went on to win five races in a row, sealing the title convincingly.

He was closely followed by clubmate Conor Byrne, who secured an excellent second overall, while Ross O’Leary completed a fantastic all-George podium in third place.

The club’s depth was further highlighted with five RSGYC helms finishing inside the top ten, as Hugh Delap, Gavan Murphy, and John Marmelstein all delivered strong performances.

A superb result for the George, underlining the club’s continued strength in ILCA sailing.

We do understand that things do come up and we will make every effort to accommodate you within our listed policies.

COURSE CANCELLATION POLICY CANCELLING WITH AT LEAST 14 DAYS’ NOTICE

Cancellations made 14 or more days in advance of the first day of your course, will receive a full refund if paid by cash or cheque. If paid online, an 8% processing & administration fee will be deducted from the total amount paid.

CANCELLING WITH LESS THAN 14 DAYS’ NOTICE

If you cancel within 13 days before the first day of your course, no refund will be given, but you do have options for rescheduling below.

COURSE RESCHEDULING POLICY RESCHEDULING WITH AT LEAST 14 DAYS’ NOTICE

If you reschedule with greater than 14 days notice from the first day of your course, you may reschedule into any open course with no additional fees or waiting periods.

RESCHEDULING WITH LESS THAN 14 DAY’S NOTICE

If you need to reschedule within 13 days before the first day of class, we can reschedule you on a space-available basis. This means that if there is an extra space in a course, you may take it at no additional cost. You will go onto a waitlist for the course you would like to schedule in to, and we will contact you if the space is still available. Please note that availability is very limited, and you may have to wait several weeks until a spot becomes available. Space-available students will be officially added and confirmed to a course no sooner than 48 hours prior to the first day of class.

Our program for our youngest sailors and sailors to be…. Fun on, in, and around the water, and the learning to sail follows.

Sea Squirts and Tigers and Lions are back! Immerse your children in our fun, friendly Sea Squirts, Tigers & Lions program with our Sunday sessions to give them a love of the sea and sailing, from an early stage.

Sundays commencing from April 19th 2026.

The Sunday Sessions will begin at 9.30am until 11.00am for Squirts, 11.30am until 1.00pm for Tigers 9.30 until 12.30 for Lions. RSGYC Members only.

(Please note Lions must have their own boat, or use of one. Club boats are available to rent).

Sailors must be fully dressed in appropriate and most importantly warm sailing clothing and ready to go afloat by 9.25am (Squirts and Lions) and 11.25am (Tigers).

Please note that places are limited, sailors should sign up ASAP to avoid disappointment.

For those who have sailed with us over the last few years, you know the drill – for those joining us this year, here is the score.

Ages (Squirts & Tigers) : 6 to 10 (no experience needed). Tigers, graduates of the Squirts or Tigers, and ready to make the move into sailing on their own in their boat.

Lions – for those sailors graduating from Sea Tigers, with their own boat (or Club boat until they have their own), who are ready to take the next step in their sailing. The aim will be to learn the basics of sailing in the Optimist and prepare sailors to move up to the next Optimist training group. Lions will be able to move up when they can sail a triangle course safely, have demonstrated the confidence and ability to manage their boat in light to medium wind and wave conditions

Boats: we use a combination of Oppies, 1720’s, Stand Up Paddleboards, Ribs, and kayaks dependant on the conditions.

Objective: a fun introduction to sailing, sea, and making friends at the Royal St George Y.C.

Required: wetsuit (full), life jacket, and suitable foot and headwear – a cag or waterproof coat too. If you need a wetsuit to get your sailor going, contact the Sailing Office and we will be able to rent a Club suit for May.

Always on, even in bad weather, the programs will run – indoor and non-sailing activities such as kayaking and SUPing will happen in place of sailing.

Frequency: The key to learning sailing and water skills is the frequency, not the intensity of learning. This program does not substitute a Summer Sailing course but complements it perfectly by building confidence slowly and surely.

Our philosophy is all about giving your child a love of the sea and sailing while making friends in a fun environment. All the instructors are chosen because of their ability to connect with the kids and ensure learning in a fun /low-pressure environment.

WhatsApp

We know, not another WhatsApp Group! But to help us keep you up to date, please send your child’s name, your name, and your mobile number, and we will add you to the WhatsApp group for the Sea Squirts & Tigers to keep you up to date.

Volunteers

Sea Squirts is run on 100% volunteer basis, and if you can support us, we would love your help. On our first Sunday morning, we can have a coffee and chat with the parents and share out the tasks.

Booking

Each month, you will get a booking link for the forthcoming 4/5 Sundays of the month. You can book as many or as few Sundays as you like. IF YOU HAVEN’T BOOKED, we will not be able to take your child sailing as we will have no waiver or proper contact details.

Sea Squirts & Tigers – €20 Per Sailor p/ session
Sea Lions – €35 Per Sailor p/session

We look forward to meeting you again this year and to our Sea Squirts and Tigers having a brilliant season of fun, friendship, and sailing.

Please be advised: There will be no refund/s issued for missed sessions. Payments are non-refundable after one month of registration date due to the cancellation of courses in the event of bad weather.

Inquiries to: sailing@rsgyc.ie

Looking forward to seeing you on Sundays!

Please Book in advance.

George Invitational Team Racing Championship 2026

The Royal St. George Yacht Club is delighted to announce the highly anticipated return of the George Invitational Team Racing Championship, taking place on May 30th and 31st.

Now entering its revitalised third year, this once‑forgotten championship has quickly re‑established itself as a cornerstone of competitive team racing. It is gaining widespread recognition as one of the premier team racing events on the international calendar, attracting top sailors while fostering a strong spirit of camaraderie and competition.

This year, the George aims to build on its growing success, ensuring an even more dynamic and competitive field. David Bolger, as Race Officer, brings exceptional experience and leadership to the race management team.

Following confirmation from World Sailing, the event is set to be designated a Grade 1 Team Racing event, further cementing the George Invitational’s status at the highest level of international team racing.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Dún Laoghaire—the historic home of team racing in Ireland—the event promises two thrilling days of racing. Competitors will battle it out in a Swiss League format aboard the iconic Firefly dinghies, culminating in high‑stakes knockout rounds to determine the ultimate champions. Perhaps this year we will finally see our first Irish winner.

Off the water, the George Invitational remains true to its social traditions, with a formal championship BBQ on Saturday night at the Royal St. George Yacht Club. This will provide teams, officials, and guests an opportunity to relax, reflect, and enjoy the unique hospitality and atmosphere for which the club is renowned.

More than just a regatta, the GeorgeInvitational is a celebration of the Royal St. George Yacht Club’s proud legacy as the cradle of Irish team racing and the birthplace of the sport nearly eight decades ago. Blending history with innovation, this event continues that tradition and promises an unforgettable experience for sailors and spectators alike.
